Mark Molnar has played strings and electronics with Generator and Kingdom Shore ( “a kind of ‘Being John Malkovich’ exercise put onto disc” Ottawa Citizen). He has played erhu and rebab in Gamelan Semara Winangun, and has composed and recorded music for numerous theatre and film productions.

Siach HaSadeh references the play on words derived by the Jewish Sages, the word roots can convey both “plants of the field,” and “meditation in the field.” It is taught that every plant has its own unique song that it sings, and that those songs are gathered to make holy music. That prayer and meditation are essential components in creation, and that music, and wordless niggun is a means of expressing that which words cannot – awakening the soul directly without language and its inherent barriers and limitations.

Phil AlbertApril 7th, 2013: #74 – Phil Albert Group

Double bass and Electric Bass player Phill Albert was born and raised on Saltspring Island, British Columbia; a small town with a deep artistic community of hippies and draft dodgers. Relocating to Toronto in 2011, he has worked in many musical styles from traditional swing based improvisation, to contemporary avant-garde. In 2011 he switched to 5ths tuning studying with Andrew Downing. In 2012, Phill attended the Banff International workshop in Jazz and Creative music where he met many of his musical soulmates. In 2011 Phill released his first original jazz record as a leader titled “In the Big World” featuring Buff Allen, Tony Wilson, and Brent Jarvis. In 2013, Phill released an EP, “Perspective Suite” based on the life and times of Emma Davis, WWII war bride and maternal grandmother.

The Adam Saikaley Quartet plays originally composed Juke Jazz. The tunes are smooth and atmospheric, while the electronic rhythms are frenetic and ankle breaking.

Acoustic guitar and piano, improvisation and composition, consonance and dissonance, contrasts and similarities, all of this is to find in this project. After many years of cooperation in various projects, Engel Mayr and Mike Tiefenbacher decided to express their creativity in a very pure form. The Concept is that not only the improvisations, but the compositions are created in joint work and to bring the nuances and possibilities of the acoustic duo music to the foreground.

March 24th, 2013: #73 – Riverrun

Riverrun is a quartet made up of some of Toronto’s strongest musical personalities. Their sound has been described as “electro-chamber-jazz” and “minimalist-avant-garde-pop”. Cinematic, delving and disciplined, Riverrun cuts across stylistic boundaries and goes deep into the moment.

In March of 2013, Riverrun takes to the road in celebration of their new release, Unravel. Recorded live in May 2012 and mixed/transformed by the visionary Peter Lutek, Unravel escapes the confines of conventional parameters in a torrent of adventurous and at times heart-breaking sound.

In a break with tradition, Unravel is being released on USB flash-drive, packaged alongside bonus material including video, images, text, and remixed audio prepared by Scott Peterson.

December 16, 2011: #40 – A Very Ayler Christmas!

Here are some words from Bernard:

This year, we caught several people, usually non-musicians, who were convinced that Omega is the Alpha, Ghosts, Bells, and many others, all Albert Ayler compositions, were true Christmas Carols and even subconsciously started to sing them by the Christmas tree.

Well, for us, this almost sounds like mission accomplished.

The concept of mashing up Albert Ayler with Christmas Carols has over the last half dozen of years of concerts slowly wound up into a well accepted tradition. in fact, a few days ago, I realized that I was in deed a fool because after all of these efforts to find matches between the two repertoires and writing the mash-ups, taking fragments of the two repertoires, I found out that it was already there all the time. In fact, Albert Ayler did the reverse process. He took Christmas Carols and transfused them in his own composition by adding, enhancing, modifying them with his own musical concepts giving them a total new perspective. Upon the release of our first CD, critics were unanimous in saying that this was the CD Ayler would have loved to make. What we all missed is that not only the fact that it was already there but also that Albert Ayler was a marketing genius. By not saying anything to anybody, Ayler could play his music year round, especially at those fantastic European summer Jazz festivals. On our side, we are stuck playing our repertoire at Christmas time only. Well, at least we got a review right in the middle of the summer this year:

“Hat and Beard” is Eric Dolphy’s tribute-through-looking-glass piece for Thelonious Monk on the classic Blue Note recording, Out to Lunch! Like its namesake composition, this pair pays Monk’s perennially vanguard music fair respect by re-envisioning it in an unconventional way. Ken Aldcroft and Dave Clark have absorbed huge chunks of Monk’s songbook, and traipse both down well-trodden paths with familiar material like “Epistrophy” and through the thornier thicket of little-tackled gems like “Brilliant Corners”. Overtly, Ken tends to play the straight man in the face of Dave’s combination of chops and comedic flair that is reminiscent of none other than Han Bennink. At times though – like Bennink’s Monk-theorist foil, Misha Mengelberg – Ken can subvert the tune from within it, and playfully prod Dave to keep up with him. In this way, Hat and Beard is a fun and joyful romp through one of the great compositional legacies of the past century.
