Concerts 22 and 23

Concert 22 – Sunday, May 8: Quentin Tolimieri and Jason Mears

This Sunday we have a couple of visitors from New York City.  Each artist will play one set.

Quentin Tolimieri is a composer who has, most recently, been focused on the production of complex, large scale works for fairly rudimentary electronic media, particularly simple instrumental sounds.  His music has been performed throughout Europe and North America at a variety of venues.  Currently based in New York City, he has had recent performances at The Stone, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, Listen/Space, New York Theatre Workshop, and Columbia University.  He holds an MA in composition from the University of Southampton (UK) and a BFA in composition and piano from California Institute of the Arts.  His primary teachers include Michael Finnissy, Michael Pisaro, and Joe Maneri.  More information is available at.
Jason Mears, from Alaska, is a saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, improviser, and educator who is currently living in New York City. He holds a BFA in Music Education from Boston University and a MFA in African-American Improvisational Music from California Institute of the Arts. Jason has studied with Wadada Leo Smith, Leroy Jenkins, Harvey Pittel, Donald Sinta, John Sampen, and Vinny Golia. As well as leading the highly acclaimed Empty Cage Quartet, Jason’s most recent projects include Anthony Braxton’s Trillium E Orchestra, Wadada Leo Smith’s Silver Orchestra, and Harris Eisenstadt’s Woodblock Prints. He has performed with Wadada Leo Smith, Vinny Golia, Frank Gratkowski, Phillip Greenlief, Jack Wright, Leroy Jenkins, Nate Wooley, Ken Filliano, Jeb Bishop, Jason Roebke, Jeff Parker, Mike Pride, Harris Eisenstadt, and Reuben Radding among many others. Jason has recorded on the Clean Feed, Nine Winds, 482, No Business, and pfMENTUM labels.

Concert 23 – Sunday, May 15th: Broscoe/Gullikson/Molnar

Three Ottawa musicians who bring a large range of influences and musical experience into play. The performance might include elements of lower case improv, electronic drones, South Asian percussion, dub, and AACM skronk.  Solo, duo and trio performances.

• David Broscoe – reeds/electronics
• Jamie Gullikson – drums
• Mark Molnar – cello/electronics

David Broscoe has played in Uzumaki, Rake, Rakestar, Generator, and the Ayler Christmas Project.

Jamie Gullikson is leader of Gamelan Semara Winangun, a member of The Flaps, and has played in improv ensembles Generator and Rake.

Mark Molnar has played strings and electronics with Generator and Kingdom Shore ( “a kind of ‘Being John Malkovich’ exercise put onto disc” Ottawa Citizen). He has played erhu and rebab in Gamelan Semara Winangun, and has composed and recorded music for numerous theatre and film productions.
