tropismes009aIn Tropismes, Pierre Hébert creates and animates images of human faces in real time, using a combination of traditional drawing techniques and modern digital image mixing. Hébert’s animation captures the energy of the moment each time a new line is drawn, and simultaneously builds upon itself in layers, creating a dense accumulation as new elements are continually added and repeated in cycles. Tropismes is inspired by the work of French writer Nathalie Sarraute and explores the gray area between abstraction and representation, looking at how the human impulse to anthropomorphize the inanimate can transform an assembly of lines, colours and shapes into a ‘face.’ Hébert’s animations will be performed in response to live improvised music by renowned contemporary clarinetist Lori Freedman.

There will be a retrospective of Pierre Hébert’s work on Friday, Frebruary 15
