The Improvising Musicians of Ottawa/Outaouais are extremely excited to announce our first ever improvised music festival, IMOOFEST, and we need your help to make it happen.
Taking place on October 5th and 6th at Ottawa’s Club Saw, IMOOFEST 2012 will showcase eight acts over two days. The festival will feature iconic Canadian improvisors Lori Freedman, Scott Thomson, Susanna Hood and Jesse Stewart, alongside a selection of established local artists.
We’re reaching out to you, our community of listeners, performers, colleagues, businesses and friends to help make this festival happen. As far as festivals go, our budget is small. We need to raise around $1000, and are hoping you’ll chip in. You can receive the following perks for your donations:
$15 – Ticket to one day the festival
$25 – 1x Festival Pass
$50 – 2x Festival Pass, or 1x Festival Pass and 1x NEW compilation CD
$100 – Festival pass, Compilation CD, and new IMOO T-shirt.
Perks for higher amounts are below. If you’re already convinced, send us an email, or click below to contribute via Paypal.
For those of you who want to know where the money is going, read ahead.
Budget:
Our budget is pretty straight-forward, and breaks into three categories:
1.) Artist Fees.
This is our big cost! We want to make sure that everyone that performs gets a piece of the pie, and that our out-of-town headlining guests get treated well. We’re offering our two out of town headlining acts $300 apiece to cover their fee and transportation, and all local performers a $50 honorarium. The local honorarium is probably going to total around $400, and $600 for the out of towners. $1000 total.
2.) Venue Costs
Club Saw thinks that what we’re doing is so awesome, that they’ve offered us a 50% off, discounted rate on renting their space. We’re looking at spending $325 to rent the space and staff it with their personnel for three nights. $325 total.
3.) Advertising and swag
We anticipate spending about $250 on posters, buttons, flyers and t-shirts. $250 total.
Budget total: $1575.
So far, in the course of the last year, IMOO has saved $650 for our organization. Combined with $1000 of fundraising, that’s $1650. It’s just a little over what we need, but just enough to allow us to, budget permitting, bring in a few more musicians.
If we end up generating income from this festival, it’s going to go straight back into our community – higher artist honorariums, higher guarantees in our regular season programming, a few special out-of-town performances, and a improvised-music barbecue celebrate.

Why Support?
As you know, IMOO is an organization dedicated to presenting improvised music. In the past two years we have organized over 50 concerts, putting Ottawa on the map as a city for improvised music.
We tread the line between light-hearted and serious. Light-hearted as in, everyone is invited to be an active, curious audience member, but dead serious in our dedication to the music and our community. We believe in the positive impact that culturally engaged artistic endeavours have upon our community.
Keeping this in mind, we want to make sure that everyone gets something for their contribution. Have a look and see what your donation will get you.
