See Through Music is the moniker for the various projects run by Toronto-based composer and bassist Pete Johnston. Johnston, a native of Windsor, Nova Scotia, moved to Toronto in 2000, completing a Master’s degree in composition in 2005 and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in 2009. Besides his work with See Through Trio, See Through 4, and See Through 5, Johnston has also played with Muskox, Aurochs, and the AIMToronto Orchestra. He co-runs the All-Set! record label with former Muskox bandmate Mike Smith.

Marilyn Lerner is renowned for her avant-garde, improvisatory style as a soloist or ensemble player. In addition to her solo work, she has played with the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, the Queen Mab Trio (with Lori Freedman and Ig Henneman), the Ugly Beauties (with Matt Brubeck and Nick Fraser) and her own ensembles. Lerner regularly performs with Sonny Greenwich, the Mad Satie Trio, and Lou Grassi, and has also appeared with Gerry Hemingway, Steve Lacy, Tito Puente, and Michael Vatcher.

Karen Ng is a Canadian improvisational musician, teacher and event organizer based in Toronto. Best known as a saxophonist, she is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed with acts including Andy Shauf, Do Make Say Think, Ken Aldcroft’s Convergence Ensemble, and the Rob Clutton Trio. A former programmer and board member of Somewhere There, she is the co-founder of TONE Festival and joined the Guelph Jazz Festival in 2018 as the Assistant Artistic and General Director.

Nick Fraser has been an active and engaging presence in the Toronto new jazz and improvised music community for over twenty years. He has performed with a veritable “who’s who” of Canadian jazz and improvised music and with such international artists as Tony Malaby, Kris Davis, William Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Marilyn Crispell, Anthony Braxton, Donny McCaslin and David Binney. In addition to leading his own quartet, Fraser is a member of Drumheller, Eucalyptus, Ugly Beauties, and the Lina Allemano Four.
